Follow the links below to learn more about using our Library to research Prince Edward Island's First Peoples.

This guide was created in the Summer and Autumn of 2010 as part of a broader Indigenous Education initiative at UPEI, funded by New Horizons. The leadership and encouragement of former Dean of Nursing Kim Critchley, Keptin John Joe Sark, and Judy Clark of the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island in this initiative is gratefully acknowledged. The logo at right was created in 2009 by S. Brady for the Mawi'omi Indigenous Student Centre at UPEI, and is used with the Centre's kind permission.

The Library is commited to maintaining and updating this resourse, as part of our roster of Subject Guides: feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Please note that the Library has also created a Subject Guide for Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS)

*** A Note on Terminology

The Library acknowledges, with regret, the persistence of outdated and colonialist terminology in some of our catalogues/finding aids, notably the Subject Heading "Indians of North America," and the orthographically incorrect "Micmac." We are working to update and correct this language, but because it was, unfortunately, so pervasive for so long, it is taking time: if you have any questions or concerns about this process, please do not hesitate to speak with us. And, we should emphasize that while we can modify our own language in cataloguing, original titles from older works with now-outmoded language are retained, as we need to accurately describe original works as published.
